She didn’t wait for her immigration journey to become uncertain before she started preparing for it.
I had a call this week with a client I have been working with for the past two years.
She first came to us as a care worker at a time when the sector was already beginning to experience significant uncertainty. From our earliest conversations, she was clear about one thing; she did not want her long-term future in the UK to depend entirely on circumstances outside her control.
That understanding shaped every decision that followed.
While continuing in her sponsored role, she invested in herself. She developed new skills, built her professional profile and deliberately created a body of work that would give her more options in the future than she had at the beginning of her journey.
When her sponsorship circumstances later changed, she wasn’t trying to work out what to do next. The work had already been done. Within a short time, she was able to secure sponsorship for a significantly more senior role because she had spent the previous two years preparing for possibilities that, at the time, hadn’t even happened. More importantly, the strategy she put in place from the outset means her long-term settlement objective remains unchanged.
During our conversation, she said something that has stayed with me.
She believes every migrant can be in the driving seat of their own immigration journey.
Hearing that was particularly rewarding because, two years ago, that confidence simply wasn’t there. It had been built over time, through deliberate decisions and a willingness to think beyond the next visa application.
