Sponsor Licence Mock Audit

A mock audit examines your sponsorship files, systems and records the way a Home Office compliance officer would, while the findings can still be fixed.

Request a Compliance Review Book a Consultation

The value of a mock audit is precisely that it is not the real thing. Gaps can be corrected, missing evidence can often be reconstructed while the people involved are still contactable, and the organisation learns what its own records look like to someone from outside.

The alternative is discovering the same findings during an actual visit, when the cost of each one is considerably higher and the opportunity to remedy it has passed.

We conduct the review on the same basis a compliance officer would: what the documents show, not what the process is supposed to achieve.

Who this is for

  • Licence holders who have never been independently reviewed
  • Employers who have been notified of a compliance visit
  • Organisations that have grown or restructured since the licence was granted
  • Sponsors who have changed HR systems or lost the person who ran sponsorship
  • Businesses planning significant international recruitment
  • Boards seeking assurance on a known but unquantified risk

How a mock audit works

01

Scope

Agreeing which files, workers, systems and periods the review covers, and what you need from it.

02

File examination

Sampling sponsored worker files against current guidance: right to work, recruitment, role, terms, absence and contact records.

03

System and interview review

How reporting decisions get made, who makes them, and whether key personnel can answer the questions they would be asked.

04

Findings

A clear account of what would be found, ranked by seriousness rather than presented as an undifferentiated list.

05

Remediation

The work of putting things right, and confirmation once it is done.

What a mock audit typically surfaces

Timing that cannot be evidenced

Checks that were carried out, but where the file cannot show when.

Reportable events not reported

Changes of role, salary, work location or absence that should have been notified and were not.

Role drift

Sponsored workers whose actual duties have moved away from the role that was sponsored.

Key personnel who cannot answer

Named individuals who do not know how the process works because they are not the person who runs it.

Single points of failure

Compliance that depends entirely on one person’s knowledge, with no documentation and no cover.

Test your compliance before the Home Office does it for you.

A compliance visit is not an examination you can revise for the week before. It examines records created over years, and the findings are whatever those records show on the day.

An organisation that has been through a mock audit knows what its position is, has corrected what could be corrected, and can explain the rest. That is a materially different position from hoping the files are in order.

How MichelleBelle assists

We carry out mock audits for employers across sectors, and stay involved through the remediation rather than handing over a report.

  • File-level review against sponsor guidance in force
  • Key personnel briefing and mock interview
  • Findings ranked by seriousness, with practical remedies
  • Support carrying out the remediation, not just identifying it
  • Re-review to confirm matters have been resolved
  • Preparation where a visit has already been notified
  • Recommendations on ownership, cover and ongoing review

Common questions

How long does a mock audit take?

It depends on the number of sponsored workers and the state of the records. Most reviews are completed within a few weeks including remediation; a review ahead of a notified visit can be compressed.

Will you tell us things we do not want to hear?

Yes. A review that confirms everything is fine has no value unless it is true. The point is to find what a compliance officer would find.

What if you find a serious breach?

We advise on what it is, whether it is reportable, and how it should be addressed and presented. Acting on a known issue promptly and properly is generally a better position than a breach discovered by the Home Office.

Can you help if a visit is already booked?

Yes, and it is worth acting quickly. We can review the files, prepare key personnel for interview and address what can still be addressed before the visit.

Immigration Rules and Home Office sponsor guidance change; where a specific requirement, fee or threshold affects a decision you are taking, check the position in force at that date or ask us.
